![]() ![]() Storytelling of this caliber would make Wolfenstein worth recommending even if the gameplay wasn't stellar, but the game doesn't disappoint there, either. He's not necessarily evil, he merely represents an entirely alien morality that values technological and genetic advancement over all else. Rather than painting central foe Death's Head as a mad scientist bent on genocide, he's assigned a wholly consistent and well-thought-out worldview. This lack of nerve doesn't really hurt the story, though, especially since the villains are such amazing accomplishments. It's left implicit that the Final Solution has developed into the Final Success, but no one ever comes out and says that this is a world without Jews, gays, and few non-white people remaining. The only bad thing I can say about the story is that it does shy away from some of the plot's darker implications at times. Likewise Anya, the second lead, gets such a detailed backstory and is so integral that it's impossible to think of her as a token love interest, even if the player does have to rescue her from danger more than once. Blaskowicz is now a vocal narrator, giving us a sense of who he is, and grounding the story's sci-fi flights through his realistic reactions to them. Far from the silent protagonist in his original appearances, B.J. Is it potentially libelous to suggest that the Beatles would have been singing in German if England had lost the war? Maybe, but it still makes for some interesting in-game music.Ĭharacters get representation equal to the concept, with the script taking time to make sure that every member of the Resistance is a fully-drawn person, rather than a simple stereotype. The standard device of newspaper clippings scattered around levels is employed, but it goes deeper as well, with posters, signage, and even record albums demonstrating how far-reaching the cultural impact of a Nazi victory would have been. The Nazi-run "future" of the 60s is as fully-realized a setting as I've seen in a video game thanks to the developers providing windows into the art and culture of this occupied world. ![]() It's to the developers' credit that the time jump feels as jarring as it does-in the opening hour they present a setting robust enough to support an entire game, and then discard it and all of its characters to show a world that has grown from the seeds sown in that first level a world where Albert Speer was allowed to build a Europe of concrete towering high enough to block out the sun, and Werner von Braun lived his dream of putting men on the moon by the early 50s. Opening in an alternate-history version of World War II where high-tech Nazis have the Allies on the run in 1946, the plot gives players a chance to acclimate themselves to the game's systems in a relatively familiar location before jumping 14 years into the future for the rest of the story. There are no RPG-lite elements, no open-world side missions, and absolutely no sign of a loot system. Wolfenstein: The New Order represents nothing less than the elevation of the FPS.Īs a pure first-person shooter, it eschews all of the genre's recent attempts at relevance and modernization to prove that not only can a game about being in narrow hallways while blasting Nazis be released in 2014, but that if made with enough care, it can be a beautiful, and even essential thing. WTF Oh my god, I'm on the MF-ing (spoiler)! LOW So you let me play classic Wolf3D with this game's weapons, but only the first level? Why not put the whole game in there!? HIGH Jimi Hendrix's last scene contains a perfect moment. ![]()

However, there are two elements in the player's favour: firstly that the game gives you a rough map location to search in, narrowing it down immensely, and secondly that what you're looking for - a white sheet of paper - is not that hard to find, usually displayed with some prominence and certainly not hidden. Opening up your email will begin the mission to find the treasure. ![]() ![]() The not so subtle change to the single player and co-op campaigns is a destructible environment. Though I do like the improvement it does feel a little forced at times and the dodges are prompted in an almost “quick-time-event” like fashion. It has the same feel as the melee combat mechanic in Mafia II where buttons are mapped for different actions, such as square for punch, triangle for dodge, circle for grappling, and the left control stick for aiming, all which offers a more precise placement of a baddie after you grab him. While the linked chapters in co-op gameplay are a game changer, the most surprising, yet subtle change to the single player campaign is the simplified melee combat mechanic which offers sensible and intuitive choices while the seamlessness of the animations give it a less repetitive feel. This is where a game’s strength is not only expected, but demanded as for Uncharted 3, a Indiana Jones/Tomb Raider like story, with a little bit of humour thrown in for good measure best describes it. No matter which character the co-op player is controlling the game play reinforces the camaraderie and single mindedness of the challenges faced by the protagonists.įor me, the most enjoyment I have had in single player gaming comes from games with a strong storyline. As opposed to the singularity of the missions in Uncharted 2, Uncharted 3’s co-op gameplay is presented as a series of linked chapters whose transition from gameplay to cut-scene is as seamless as the single player campaign. This is no more clearly defined than in the revamped cooperative story mode. These characters are plausible and the goading and jibes between them signal the richness of their friendship. What I found surprising was rather than offer the betrayal method of plot twist device we experienced in the previous two games in the series, Uncharted 3 focuses on the relationship between these two treasure hunters. We get an insight in to what made these two such strong friends. Unexpectedly, the story focuses on Nate and Sully. Thanks to the exceptionally well-crafted script, voiced by tremendously talented voice actors that drive the storyline, the ride is enjoyable and the characters are best described as likeable rogues. As Nate and Sully are pitted against the best villain by far of the franchise, they hunt for clues and enemies in their pursuit of an immensely valuable and mythical treasure. As many of my friends and fellow gamers have observed you can’t help but compare Uncharted 3 to George Lucas’ cinematic masterpiece Indiana Jones Trilogy. For me Uncharted and Uncharted 2 set the standard for what I wanted out of a game, but Uncharted 3 has redefined the gaming experience for myself, an outcome that was completely unexpected. To be certain, Uncharted 3 is still at its core, a rollicking, running, punching, climbing, puzzle solving and shoot the bad guys game, but yet it is so much more. From the opening barroom brawl, which serves not only as the tutorial for the new, much improved, melee mechanic, but also introduces the Villainess, Katherine Marlowe every moment in Uncharted 3’s single player campaign is a surprise. But, with that expectation comes the surprisingly unexpected, and that unpredictability is clearly the power of Uncharted 3. ![]() The question for me was: “Would Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception absorb me in the same way Uncharted 2 did?” Not only that, I wondered if it would it command my gaming focus with a story so compelling and exciting as I anxiously weigh the peril that may befall Nate as he turns around the next bend? I couldn’t wait to find out.įrom the first frame and the timbre of the first note, the single player campaign of Uncharted 3 asserts itself and dares you to venture towards the edge of the precipice of the wild ride fans of the series have come to expect. A game as finely crafted as Uncharted 2 is a very rare thing, so the bar was set very high for the third for game number ‘3’. I found everything about Uncharted 2 to be stellar from story, to gameplay, to graphics, to score everything about Uncharted 2 was second to none. When I reviewed Uncharted 2: Among Thieves in October of 2009 I was blown away. To say the release of Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, Naughty Dog’s third chapter of the Nathan Drake saga, was highly anticipated by me would be a gross understatement. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Bill was an odd old man-childlike and “off”-who ran his store out of a ramshackle white clapboard building. His assassination prompted another announcement over the loudspeaker, but I didn’t comprehend the magnitude of it all until a few days later, when I biked up to Bill’s candy store. Lisa’s desk remained empty for the rest of the year. Our principal, Corneil Balding, who was bald, called for a moment of silence over the loudspeaker. Lisa died before anyone in our grade who was brave enough could befriend her. When she did make an appearance, she reminded me of the characters in an Edward Gorey book that I tried to forget we had on our shelves. Lisa, a tiny, fragile, ghost-like girl who was rarely in school. I carried flowers and tried to be solemn. I remember a procession for an animal that we buried-maybe it was Honey. Perhaps this attitude was a coping mechanism: by the time she was thirty, my mother had five children and not much money, and was living in a tiny town on the Mohawk River, in upstate New York, with a husband whom she adored and whose priorities-his career, his comfort, his dreams, and his happiness-always came first. To her, everything was fodder for laughter nothing was off-limits, no joke was ever too soon. ![]() So did my young, beautiful mother, although she meant no malice. I ran as fast as I could up the hill again and burst into the kitchen. I stopped and waited for her to right herself. I saw her feet first they were sticking straight up from the murky water. So, sometimes you have to go to market and rely on the users to bring issues to light. It’s hard to get a handle on everything during development when the user base just isn’t there. We love Premiere Pro, so we’d love to see Adobe get it back to a place where it runs smoothly - but it will likely take a little time. You can also try this solution from Urban Video Inc. In the meantime, try turning off the hardware acceleration located in the preferences. Hopefully 2015 will be the end of the issue. Others say the issue takes place after switching from one sequence to another. Others mention the issue happening when working with R3D RAW files. Some have reported getting audio drops followed by a “A low-level exception occurred” error. This makes it hard to pinpoint the exact cause of this issue. The unfortunate thing is this issue seems to be occurring due to different circumstances with each user. If you haven’t experienced this, most users report that during playback while editing, Premiere Pro will freeze and become unresponsive. This particular issue has been going on since Premiere Pro 2014, and it’s one that many Premiere Pro users hope Adobe will find a solution for soon. ![]() Until then, let’s see how we can downgrade from El Capitan to Yosemite. As we move into a new year and more updates arrive for both OSX and CC, we should finally get to the point where things are running smoothly.
